5 Myths About Squarespace
Website design isn’t rocket science. It never has been, but it may have seemed like it. Now in the wonderful year of 2017, web development companies have been creating their software with a heavier focus on ease-of-use, with the end goal of any Joe Shmoe being able to make a website without having to learn HTML, CSS, or any coding, for that matter.
Enter Squarespace, the company at the forefront of this movement. Squarespace has given the world an editor that is not only very easy to use, but also produces an end result that is almost guaranteed to look as quality as any other professional website out there. Does it have it’s limitations? Of course. You’re going to have that with platforms that favor simplicity over complexity. That doesn’t mean it’s not a robust platform. You’ll see a few social media posts shooting around that say otherwise. Here’s a few points we’ve noticed that we’d like to address.
1. Squarespace is a DIY website builder.
Like we mentioned above, the simplicity of Squarespace is deceptive. There’s a common gaming adage that goes “Easy to learn, difficult to master”. While any newcomer to the web design wouldn’t have much of a problem navigating their way through the page builder, an expert can create truly beautiful pieces of web content if they know the ins and outs of the platform.
2. SEO capabilities are not as robust as Wordpress.
We’ve heard this one a few times, and it manifests in different ways.
“You lose your search engine rank when you switch.”
“Squarespace doesn’t allow you to work on SEO.”
“Wordpress is the only serious platform for SEO.”
None of those are facts, they’re opinions. We’ve found great success with the SEO capabilities of Squarespace. As long as you do your research before making the plunge into the platform, you will be fine.
3. Squarespace limits your creativity.

That quote pretty much summarizes how we feel about this topic, but we’ll elaborate. Yes, Squarespace will limit you to the themes that they provide. But that is all part of the design ethos that is put behind every single website that comes through the platform. If you’re not skilled, you’ll still put out a beautiful website. If you are, then you can use those themes as a springboard for bigger and better ideas. Each theme is malleable in a way to where you can have a completely fresh looking design as long as you put thought and creativity behind it. Sure, limitless customization is a pretty nice draw, but many creatives will tell you that their best work comes from a place where they worked within limitations. Just ask our web designer. He’s well versed in several web platforms and to this day he still prefers Squarespace.
4. Squarespace isn’t mobile friendly.
This is simply another opinion and not a very well thought-out one. Squarespace provides you with a mobile preview that easily allows you to design for both the big and small screen. In fact, the way the platform is designed is meant to create a symbiotic environment where the desktop and mobile page exist in harmony. You can save a lot of time on mobile design because the platform does most of the work for you. There’ll be instances where you’ll look at a mobile preview and realize that you don’t even have to put in any extra effort. That’s just how good it is.
5. The pricing is too steep.
Look, if you want to use Wix or Weebly, that’s on you. The pricing is pretty attractive, but you won’t get a professional end product that gives you the robust functionality that you’d want for a business or e-commerce website. Compared to other professional options, Squarespace is nearly unbeatable with it’s monthly/annual options, and you even get a free domain name to boot (provided you get the annual plan).
Before we sign off, we’d like to stress that there’s nothing wrong with Wordpress. It’s a great platform and it’s one of the most widely used on the internet, for a good reason. But we really, really like Squarespace for its focus on beautifully designed websites, and we feel compelled to defend it against its competitors. It’s done wonders for us, and we think it can do wonders for your site too.
